Working with straws - artistic manual labor - has a beneficial effect on the development of intelligence, speech and other mental functions of the child, and initiates the ability for independent creativity. Beautiful crafts and handmade toys will help children acquire their first labor skills, develop imagination, creative thinking, hard work, patience and perseverance. And you don’t have to be afraid that this is a troublesome business, any troublesome business, it’s worth it.

So, to the best of our ability, we will turn into craftswomen - straw sculptures.

Istage. First I give historical information:

Weaving three-dimensional figures from straw - dolls, animals, birds - has its roots in the distant past.

Researcher of Russian peasant toys N. Tsereteli emphasized that in Russia at the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century, straw dolls were made wherever bread was grown. Adults made them for their children as amulets. Such dolls did not have a face, and, therefore, they were considered an inanimate object, inaccessible to the infusion of evil forces into it, and therefore harmless to the child. At the same time, the main meaning of a straw doll is play, entertainment, fun not only for children, but also for adults. Straw dolls are called “strigushki” because the bundle of straw from which they are tied is trimmed evenly at the bottom.

Straw dolls - “strigushki” from a century ago can be seen in the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, in the State Toy Museum in Sergiev Posad near Moscow.

Straw dolls are laconic and conventional in conveying female and male appearance. Their expressiveness lies in the constructiveness of the plastic, born of a simple and rational way of making the figure. Most often, dolls are made from only one bunch of straw. The origin of the techniques of twisting and bending a bunch of straw is rooted in the labor skills of harvesting. So the women twisted a bundle of straws, which they tied around a sheaf of ears of grain. The Russian folk name for the process of making dolls is "knitting dolls", “they will impose dolls”- also associated with knitting sheaves.

For centuries, the straw doll was associated only with peasant culture. Its production was limited to the village, peasant family, and, unlike the production of wooden and clay toys, did not acquire a commercial character.

The ancient customs of making ritual animals and dolls from straw have come into our lives. They have become a theme for the creativity of many modern masters and artists.

Various decorative sculptures and toys can be made from straw due to its ability to bend and maintain a given shape.

IIstage.Review of techniques.

Let's consider the simplest, traditional for folk straw toys, constructive techniques for making straw dolls:

1. A doll made from one bunch of straw. A bundle of 50-70 straws is twisted in the center into a bundle, bent in half and its ends are swapped so that a loop is curled in the middle of the bundle. The bundle is tightly tied with threads. To trim the ends of the straws, the bunch is squeezed by hand and the bottom is trimmed with scissors. The resulting toy doll conventionally depicts a female figure in a long sundress

2. From one bunch of straw you can make a doll - a toy with conventionally designated hands. A bunch of straw is tied at the top to form a doll's head. From the main bundle of straw, separate two small bundles of 15-20 straws for the arms, braid them into three strands, bend them in a semicircle, attach them to the bundle-body, pulling them tightly with a thread along the waist line

3. A doll made from two bundles of straw: the first bundle is the body, the second bundle is the arms, which is inserted into the bundle-torso, previously divided into two parts, one of which, located on the chest, is arched. After which the parts of the torso bundle are connected and tightly pulled with a thread along the waist line

4. A male straw figurine can be knitted in the same way as a female one, from two bundles, the only difference being that the legs are made from the bundle intended for the skirt

5. Straw angel. The frame is made in the same way as the frame of a female figure, only wire is inserted into one of the straws intended for the arms in order to subsequently give the arms a bent position. For the wings, take 6-8 straws, tie them in the center and secure them at the back under a small bunch of straw. The frame is also pulled along the waist line

6. A doll made from several bundles of straw. The doll's head and arms are made using the technique described in point 3, the skirt is made from a separate bundle of straw, it is inserted inside the bundle-torso and connected to it with a bandage along the waist line

7. Another technique for making a doll from several bundles of straw. The head and arms of the doll are performed using the technique described in point No. 3. For the skirt, the straw stems are sewn together at the top of the bundle, so that when the skirt is unfolded, it looks like a fan. The skirt is wrapped with stitching around the doll's waist and tied to the body

Since ancient times, straw has been used not only for feeding livestock, but also for making various crafts. The fact is that it is a fairly cheap, environmentally friendly material. If you don't know what you can make from straw, this article will help you figure it out.

What products can be made from straw?

There are a lot of things that can be made from the presented material. Very popular, for example, are bags and baskets made of straw. In hot regions of the country, hats are made from this material. The fact is that they protect well from the sun and are not hot in them.

If you don’t know what can be made from straw, then pay attention to floor mats, tabletop coasters, shoes, toys, and crafts. It should be noted that you can even build a house from straw blocks. At the same time, its quality will not be inferior to a brick structure.

What are the advantages of crafts made from straw?

You already know what can be done. Now you should understand the advantages of this material. Among them are the following:

Low cost (straw is waste from grain processing, so it has a low price);

Naturalness (this material is natural);

Strength (despite the fact that the elements are considered fragile and break quickly, when wet they acquire elasticity and are difficult to tear);

Beautiful appearance (products made from this material have a very attractive shade, in addition, they can have a complex shape, that is, you can decorate any interior);

Combination with any style solution;

Possibility of coloring crafts.

From these small elements you can build anything you want. In this case, you only need properly processed material and patience.

How to select and prepare material for work?

If you know what can be made from straw, all that remains is to figure out what material you need to select and how it should be processed. When collecting stems, pay attention to their color, length and elasticity. For weaving, straws from cereals such as rye should be used. Wheat stalks can also be used, but they are thicker and coarser. For the production of small elements, use oat material.

The material should be thoroughly dried before use. Otherwise, it will begin to rot and rot. Straw can be stored in boxes and bundles only after ventilation and drying. It should also be thoroughly cleaned of dust.

Before starting work, the stems must be processed. That is, you should fill the straw with warm water for half an hour (or several hours if the material is last year), cover it with plastic wrap or a simple cloth and press it down with some kind of weight. This process continues until the stems become soft and pliable.

If you are going to do some kind of artistic finishing of paintings, you may need to bleach or paint the elements. It's not at all difficult to do this. For example, to lighten elements, use regular bleach for natural fabrics. For coloring, you can use the calcination method, as well as aniline or natural dyes. Thanks to this, the product will turn out very beautiful and bright. During the procedure, you should add soda to the solution to fix the color.

The last step is to iron the elements along the fibers.

What are "pellets" and what are they used for?

You should know that not only crafts or decorative elements can be made from straw. This material recovers quickly and, when ignited, produces a fairly large amount of heat. This means that it can be used for space heating instead of wood.

In addition, straw pellets are used as cattle feed. However, as a heating material, they are much superior to sawdust in terms of heat transfer and efficiency. The fact is that the granules contain quite a lot of volatile substances, which ensure long-term combustion of the material. The presented material does not require special storage conditions. The fact is that it is very resistant to moisture and rotting. The only drawback is the high ash content of pellets. However, the waste is environmentally friendly.

Features of straw weaving

In order to work with the material, you must prepare the place. It is desirable that the surface is dry and hard. To prevent it from being damaged, be sure to cover it with oilcloth. You may also need the following tools and materials:

Scissors or short knife;

PVA glue;

Paint, varnish and brush.

If you are making a flat picture and not a three-dimensional product, then you need to prepare a base for it, which can be thick cardboard. While working, observe safety precautions as much as possible. Before you begin, you need to think through the product you want to build, choose a method for making it, and also draw a sketch on paper.

In what ways can you weave straw products?

There are several methods for connecting elements: straight, spiral, flat and volumetric. To use the first method, straws may be flattened. The resulting products are used as rugs, panels or individual elements for more complex crafts.

In spiral weaving, a bundle of straws is tightly wrapped with twine. Next, they need to be laid in tight turns. If the product is large, then the tourniquet should be thick.

The last two weaving methods are quite simple. You will need separate straws for this work. At the same time, they need to be thoroughly flattened. To do this, simply run the blunt end of the knife over them several times. Straw wicker is not only a great way to decorate your home. Thanks to the process, you can show your imagination, relax and get mental satisfaction.

Construction of thatched houses

It must be said that from the presented material you can make not only any crafts or household items. In some countries, houses are built from it. At the same time, housing has many advantages: good sound and thermal insulation, low cost of building walls, environmental friendliness, good ventilation of the structure. And the construction is done quite quickly.

The material for constructing the structure must be absolutely dry so that it does not begin to rot over time. For the work, wooden beams are used (as the frame of the house, as well as for the rafter system, bales, concrete mortar (for making the foundation), roofing felt (for isolating straw from the base). It will also be necessary to use other materials for the subsequent finishing of the structure. The bales are attached to each other using bent reinforcement, which is installed in each corner.

First of all, the frame of the house is built. To do this, beams are mounted in the corners of the previously marked area, as well as in those places where doors and windows will be installed. Now you can move on to stacking the bales. The evenness of the installation must be constantly checked with a level and a level.

To ensure that the corners of the structure are even, make special brackets from wood. Before you make a straw house, try to choose the right size bales. You cannot forcefully “shove” them into the remaining gaps. Therefore, the elements must have different lengths.

Features of the construction of a bull and a horse from the presented material

The presented material can be used to make stuffed animals. For example, children are often interested in how to make a horse from straw. To work, you will need three main bundles of material: from the first we make the head, neck and front legs (we divide it into two parts downwards), from the second - the tail and torso, and from the third the hind legs will be built. These elements are tied with twine. You will need extra straw for the mane.

So, first you should tie the first bundle from one edge, then it must be turned inside out. Next, the twine separates the head and neck of the future horse. Here you need to maintain proportions. . Then a small part of the straw is bent to the side at a right angle to the head (the torso will be attached to it). The remaining material is used to make the front legs. The rest of the horse is constructed in much the same way. Lastly, the mane, ears and tail are attached.

If you don’t know how to make a steer from straw, then the principle of construction is the same as that of a horse. You just need to twist the horns additionally.

What crafts can be made from straw?

In principle, even a preschooler can work with this material. Making the simplest product is not too difficult. For example, before you make a Christmas tree craft out of straw, try to learn how to design different types of geometric shapes. For example, to build a square you need to tie the straws at right angles. Then the prepared frame is wrapped with flat elements. The drawing depends on your imagination.

For more complex figures, you will need to make a cross, which is subsequently braided with straw ribbon. In addition, from such materials you can make beautiful braids of different sizes and shapes that will decorate any item or panel.

Features of making a doll

This toy is quite simple to construct, so even a child can handle it. To work you need straw, scissors, colored threads (sometimes wire), a brush and paints (for decoration). First, the straw needs to be gathered into a bundle, bent in half and tied closer to the edge. This will be the doll's head. Be sure to consider the proportions of the craft. Next, separate a small bundle of material from the sides. Their ends should be cut and tied. Now your hands are ready.

A little lower, you should wrap the main bundle (waist) with rope, and carefully straighten the remaining straw (this will be the doll’s skirt). Next, we proceed to decorating the product. The face is painted with ordinary paints; as for clothes, they can be made from small scraps of fabric. Now you know, from straw. Good luck!

Today we will try to make a bull out of hay. Let's start by drawing up a model of the future sculpture and make a pattern. To make sure all the pieces were the right size, I cut them out and joined them together.

Photo by Olga Polyakova

We place the parts on a sheet of cardboard and trace them. There were six parts: two pairs of legs, a torso, a head, a neck and ears. Let's mark the slots with which the parts will be connected to each other.

Photo by Olga Polyakova

We cut out the details and form the basis of the sculpture. Of course, it would be possible to make a frame out of wire, but strong wire that a child can bend is not always at hand, and cardboard is quite easy to find.

Photo by Olga Polyakova

For further work we will need hay, strong thread and scissors. There is a little hay in the picture, here it is for example. My bull will not be small, its size can be approximately imagined from the previous photo, in comparison with the scissors. All the hay that was needed for the work takes up approximately the volume of a five-liter bottle.

Photo by Olga Polyakova

We begin to attach the hay to the base of the sculpture. We apply bundles of hay to the bull's legs and wrap them with thread, straight from the spool.

Photo by Olga Polyakova

I don't cut the thread when moving on to a new part of the sculpture. There are now tufts of hay sticking out at the top of the future bull's legs. There is no need to wrap them; over time they will be covered with new layers.

Photo by Olga Polyakova

Now we apply the hay bundles to the body of the sculpture and secure them with thread. At the same stage, I formed the base for the bull's tail.

Photo by Olga Polyakova

We decorate the bull's ears separately. Please note: the middle part of the part remains free, otherwise the part will be difficult to attach to the head of the sculpture.

Photo by Olga Polyakova

We attach the ears to the bull's head and tighten the part with thread. We cover the neck of the sculpture with hay.

Photo by Olga Polyakova

Time to shape the head of the sculpture. The head turns out to be longer than the frame of the head, this is not accidental; later we will need to form the nose of the animal.

Photo by Olga Polyakova

We twist horns from small bunches of grass and attach them to the head of the bull. We cover the junction of the parts with bundles of hay. Check, maybe the figure is missing volume somewhere else? Time to fix it.

Photo by Olga Polyakova

We are finishing the formation of the animal’s tail: the bull’s tail is quite long, with a tassel.

Photo by Olga Polyakova

To finish off the figurine I use doll eyes, a small bell and some raffia (palm fibre).

Photo by Olga Polyakova

Giving the bull's head a more regular shape, we tighten the muzzle with a thread: make several turns, then fasten the thread and cut it off. We attach the goby's eyes and hang the bell.

Photo by Olga Polyakova

It seems to me that such a sculpture will fit well into the interior of a country house or dacha. By the way, if you don’t get around to such crafts in the summer, you can buy hay at a pet store, it’s not expensive.

I hope your kids enjoy making hay sculptures. I look forward to your questions and stories of success in the comments.

Hay cow or straw bull

Here she is - a beauty!

To make it you need: hay, cardboard, thread (mine is the color of hay).

We cut out three parts from packaging cardboard: two identical sides - with legs, the middle one - with a head.

We place a bundle of hay on a cardboard template and wrap it with thread, pulling it tight.

Gradually increase the thickness (body).

I made the horns by wrapping a thin bundle of hay of the required length. Now, it immediately looked like a cow.

The tail is the same as the horns.

The first part (middle) is ready. Take the second template and lay the hay, wrapping it with threads. First, the limbs.

this is on the back side

then the torso

We connect the middle and side parts with the same thread

Now the hay cow is ready

CRAFTS FROM HAY

Every summer resident and owner of a private house wants to decorate his garden plot. And you don’t have to spend a lot of money to do this. A lot of interesting things can be made from scrap materials, from those that literally lie under our feet. One such material is regular hay.

Before making crafts from hay, you need to take care of suitable material. The grass should not be too tall and strong, and should not include sticks, foreign leaves, or thorns. It is better to mow it after rain or dew, and to dry it in sunny weather, turning it over often. The finished hay should bend easily, smell pleasant and have a green tint. Hay figurines do not require a frame, because the grass is very plastic and easily takes the desired shape. To make such crafts you will need strong thread, scissors, glue or a glue gun, and various materials for decorating finished products, such as branches, dry leaves, pine cones, fruits, etc. You can also use various beads and buttons to indicate the eyes and spouts of products. In the garden, hay crafts will last one season; by the end of autumn they darken and lose their attractive appearance. But, in my opinion, this is not scary, because next year it will be possible to make new ones. Fortunately, there is no shortage of material.

Mouse. To make a mouse we will need: hay, strong linen or cotton thread, glue, scissors, beads or buttons for the eyes and nose.

  • You need to twist the hay into a rope and fold it in half. This will be the body of the future mouse.
  • Wrap one end of the tourniquet around the mouse’s back, make several turns and secure with thread.
  • Next, you need to form the body of the mouse from hay, tying it with threads. During the formation process, hay can be crushed, pulled out, and more can be added if necessary. It is necessary to achieve a narrowing of the torso to form the head and neck. Wrap the remaining end of the bundle with thread until the end. This will be the ponytail.
  • For the ears, the hay needs to be rolled into rings and wrapped with thread.
  • Glue the ears, eyes and nose of the mouse with glue.

    Hedgehog. To make a hedgehog, you will need the same materials as for a mouse. The body for a hedgehog is made in almost the same way as for a mouse, only in this case you do not need to make a tail. On the body, glue bundles of hay in transverse rows, starting from the head. We cut them to a height of 3-4 centimeters. We glue on the eyes and nose. The back of the hedgehog can be decorated with dry leaves and berries.

    Additional materials: buttons for the eyes, a piece of thick foil for the beak, cotton grass fruits, wire, linen twine

    1. Twist a thick hay rope, make several internal turns to form a tight oval, secure with thread. Similarly, twist a smaller dense oval and glue its wide part to the narrow part of the first oval, getting the body and head of an owl. Fold two small flagella into rings and, wrapping them with thread, glue them to the owl’s head.

    2. For the wings, fold a thick rope in half and secure the fold with a thread, slightly loosening its tension at the bend and strengthening it at the other end, try to give the wing a curved shape. Do the same for the second wing. Glue the wings to the body.

    3. Glue the cotton grass fruits to the head and body of the owl, arranging them in parallel rows and securing them close to each other.

    4. Make the paws similar to the paws of a cockerel. Glue a beak made of foil or a piece of metal and button eyes.

    1. Select material: hay is suitable for making a cat and other garden crafts. 2. To make a kitten, roll a ball of hay Ø 7 cm and wrap it with threads, preferably the color of hay. Leave long ends of grass on one side (for subsequent connection with the body of the craft .(Figure 1).2.Around the left ends of the hay on the cat’s head, wrap several layers of a body 18 cm long and 10 cm in diameter and wrap it with threads (see Figure 1 below).3.Make the cat a muzzle.To do this, from the front to wrap a small ball Ø 2 cm around the head and attach it with threads to the head. 3. Fill the transitions to the head with hay and level them (see Fig. 2) 4. Make paws for the craft. To do this, take a bundle of hay 10 long for each of the four paws. cm, and bend it in the middle and from the point of bend, wrap threads around both halves of the bundle (about 4 cm long). Cut the ends diagonally and glue them on the sides under the cat’s body. Rewind with additional threads. 5. Make ears. Make them out of cardboard and cut out the ears. Wrap each ear with hay and then attach it to the head (glue or sew).6.Make eyes.Glue half a wooden bead as eyes.Also make and attach a nose.Make a mustache.7.Design the craft (you can attach a bow to the cat, as in photo).

Goby - straw barrel) - Gardener

In the life of a rural worker, nothing was wasted, and nothing was made from straw, a unique natural material: bast shoes, dishes, utensils, and straw hats are known among all nations. For a long time, in different parts of the world there have been customs to make figures of people, animals, and birds from straw. Even in folk tales, the straw barrel goby was noted.

Such dolls and figurines were not only toys for children, but were also used in various ceremonies, rituals, and as a talisman for the home.

Creating animal figures is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance, and is quite fun. To work, you will need hay, straw (you need to choose thin or medium-thick straw, but always without elbows, even), strong threads or braid. You can use any dry grass or moss, toothpicks, matches. The straw is first soaked over hot steam, so it becomes comfortable and pliable for weaving; you can also use dyed straw. Work on a more complex toy begins with the manufacture of a wire frame, which is braided with straw, pulling the bundle in the right places with threads.

Straw is a simple and affordable material from which you can make various crafts. Making products from straw is a traditional folk art activity. It was used to make toys, baskets, boxes, paintings, appliqués, kitchen utensils and much more. Currently, straw crafts are very popular among handmade lovers.

Straw crafts: preparation

The raw materials for the work are straight sections of the middle part of the stems. The leaves will help you create the background of the product, and the knees are cut off. The stems are used to form straw ribbons, which are used for crafts. The material can be dyed in any color using aniline fabric dyes.

Using folk remedies you can give the material noble shades. So, using a hot iron you can easily change the color of the straw to brown, and hydrogen peroxide will add a silvery-white tint. When boiled in potassium permanganate, the material will acquire a soft pink color, and a solution of baking soda makes it yellow-golden.

There are 2 ways to make straw ribbons: hot and cold. If you use the cold method, just cut the stems lengthwise and smooth them with the rings of scissors. The cold method helps the strips remain shiny and elastic for a long time.

The hot method involves preliminary steaming the straw stems at a temperature of 80 degrees. After boiling, the stems are cut lengthwise and ironed with a hot iron. The ribbons turn out wide and shiny, completely ready for use.

What can be made from straw?

Flower

You will need:

  1. Straw;
  2. Fabric of purple or other color;
  3. Threads to match the fabric;
  4. Yellow ribbon;
  5. Wire;
  6. Thin paper;
  7. Thin cardboard;
  8. PVA glue;
  9. Scissors;
  10. Wide capacity;
  11. Ammonia 10 percent - 1 tsp.
  12. Hydroperit - 9 tablets;
  13. Water - 500 ml.

Instructions for weaving a flower from straw:

  • Prepare a solution by mixing hydroperite, ammonia and water in a container. Place the straw in a wide container and fill with the prepared mixture. Leave for 6 hours: stir the material several times to bleach evenly.
  • After bleaching, rinse thoroughly. For the flower you will need 10 straws. Cut them along the grain with scissors and unfold them with your hands. Using a hot iron, iron the strips from the inside to straighten.
  • Glue the strips onto thin paper using PVA. Press firmly so that no gaps are visible. Using a rolling pin, roll the prepared layer.
  • Make a stencil out of cardboard and place it on the layer. On the reverse side, draw 12 leaves and cut them out.
  • Apply glue to each cut out leaf and glue the fabric to it. Take the threads, treat them with glue and glue them to the edges of each leaf. Let the composition dry, then cut it out.
  • Cut a circle out of cardboard with a diameter of 1 cm and glue 6 leaves to it. Let dry. Glue the remaining leaves on the back side and wait until dry again.
  • Pierce the middle of the flower in two places and tie it to the wire. Wrap the ribbon around the wire. The flower is ready! To create a bouquet, make several flowers, tie them with a beautiful ribbon and place them in a vase.

Straw doll

Cut the straws into equal lengths. Fold in half. Using wire or twine, form a head, not forgetting to insert a toothpick or skewer into the knot.

Divide the body into 2 parts, tie it with rope and insert straw arms. Braid your hands or wrap them with straw.

The ends of the arms can be tied to a belt, defining the waist of the straw doll, or left free. The straw doll is ready.

Straw weaving

Golden-maned horse

To work, you only need straw, twine and wire.

  • The horse is assembled from 3 straw sheaves. Twist one sheaf tightly near the end cut, securing with wire. Leave the two long ends free. Bend the straws through the wire ring in the opposite direction. Make sure the ends are inside the straw bundle. Tie the bun with twine and bend the upper part into an arc - this will be the basis for the head and neck.
  • Now start doing the mane. It is collected from individual straws. Go around the horse's neck with each one and intertwine it with a rope made of straw. When the mane is completely ready, take a new bun and bend it around the horse’s body, tying it with twine.
  • Step back a short distance, pull the bundle again with twine, marking the body of the horse. Divide the remaining part of the straw strand into 3 parts - these will be the hind legs and tail. Bend the 2 parts of the tourniquet at right angles to the body and tie with twine near the end cuts.
  • Divide the first bundle of straw in half so that the ends of the wire are in the middle of each half - these will be the front legs. The knees are marked by twisting the middle of the legs with twine and strips of straw. Cut or bend the protruding ends of the wire so that they are not visible. Gently bend your legs to create the impression of movement.
  • Take some straws and twist them using scissors or a screwdriver. Attach the tail to the horse's body.
  • The final stage of the product is finishing the figurine: tie the places with twine with straw strips. The golden-maned horse is ready! You can give it to a child or friend who appreciates handmade items.

Straw paintings

Paintings made from straw are especially beautiful and original. It’s not difficult to make such work, the main thing is to follow the basic rules.

You will need:

  1. Straw;
  2. Scissors;
  3. Cardboard;
  4. Glue;
  5. Iron;
  6. Brush.

Instructions for making paintings from straw:

  • To make any painting you need a sketch. Take colored pencils and sketch out a sample of your future craft on a sketchbook sheet.
  • Before painting, prepare the straw using hot or cold methods. Prepare cardboard - this will be the basis of the picture. Using a pencil, draw the outlines of the parts on the cardboard.
  • Cut out the necessary pieces of straw according to the size of the parts of the picture. Cover the back of the straw with glue and press it tightly to the cardboard in the desired location. The main thing is not to rush, so as not to spoil the product. Wait until the part sticks well to the cardboard. Do this with each detail until you get the intended picture. Now decorate it with paints and place it behind the glass.

Painting "Butterfly"

Cut out the wings, body of the butterfly and details of the pattern on the wings from a straw plate. Make sure that the pair of wings is symmetrical. Cut the head and antennae from one wide strip of straw.

Draw a picture on cardboard and glue each straw piece to the desired location. First, it is better to glue the wings, placing patterns on them. Place the body, head and antennae on top. Using paints, decorate your butterfly.

Painting "Squirrel"

Cut out the squirrel parts from a straw plate: head (circle), body (triangle), tail (large oval), ears (small triangles). Glue the parts to the cardboard, creating a squirrel: first the body, then the tail, head and ears. Cut out the eyes and mouth from a wide plate.

Straw is an ideal material for creating crafts. You will not only get a lot of fun, but also beautiful original products. Create paintings, baskets, boxes, toys, bags, etc. from straw. You can decorate your home with straw figurines or give them to your family or friends for some holiday. Surely they will appreciate such an unusual gift!

Autumn is the time when you want to bring a little more warmth and comfort into your home. And even little things like handmade fakes help with this. Straw fakes are some of the most unusual, original and beautiful. Straw is a light and pliable material that is interesting to work with.

What can be made from straw?

You can come up with a lot of ideas for crafts, starting from simple bouquets with the addition of autumn flowers and straw dolls, which used to be always woven for the harvest festival in Rus', to complex paintings, some animals that you can make together with children, decorating flower pots , mirrors and photo frames and other crafts for the home.

DIY straw bouquets

Bouquets of flowers made from this natural material will look very impressive. In order to make one such flower, you will need fabric of a color you like and discreet threads, wire, paper or cardboard, glue, scissors, ammonia, hydroperite (several tablets) and water.

How to do it?

First, you should make a solution of water, ammonia and hydroperite. Leave the straw stalks in this mixture for 6-8 hours, depending on the saturation of your solution. Then wash the straw tubes thoroughly and cut them along the grain. Carefully glue the resulting ribbons onto the paper, pressing them carefully so that there are no bent ends. Then take a second sheet of paper, preferably a thicker one, and after drawing a stencil on it, press it onto the resulting layer of straw stems.

From the back side, cut out several neat leaves and glue scraps of fabric to them. Finish the edges of the leaves with threads, gluing them with glue. After the resulting product has dried, cut it out. Then make 6 more leaves and prepare a circle of cardboard. Glue the leaves to the circle on both sides, then pierce the flower in two places and connect all the elements into one composition using wire. The flower can be decorated with ribbons or beads. To create a bouquet, make several of these flowers.

DIY straw paintings

One of the most popular techniques is the production of simultaneously flat and visually three-dimensional paintings from straw. It’s not difficult to master it yourself, just figure out how it’s done, although it’s a rather labor-intensive process.

How to do it?

To create a neat and beautiful painting from straw, you will need, again, scissors, thick sheets of paper (or cardboard), glue, brushes, pencils and, of course, the straw itself. First of all, you need to figure out what you will depict on your “canvas”. Next, lightly draw the main details on paper or take as a basis, for example, pictures from coloring books, books and magazines. Please note that we draw the basics of your picture not on the paper that will be the basis of the fake, but on any other.

Then prepare the straw according to the method mentioned above: dip it in an ammonia solution, cut the straw with scissors, iron it. Glue the straw onto the drawn parts, let them dry, then carefully cut them out. After all this, you can safely take the sheet of paper or cardboard you prepared for the base. Glue the resulting pieces of the painting directly onto the “canvas” and press gently. The picture is ready! If you want to make it a little brighter, color it with paints or ribbons.

DIY straw dolls

Making straw dolls is an activity that our ancestors loved to do. To make one of these dolls or amulets, you will need toothpicks, wire, scissors and fabric.

In this case, there is no need to straighten or smooth the straw. You just need to trim it so that all the straws are the same length. Fold them in half to keep the ends straight. Determine where your doll's head will end and then carefully mark it with wire. Next, shape the waist, again tying it with wire. If the doll breaks, insert a toothpick into the knot between the “head” and “body” like a spine. Hands can be made either by regular braiding of straw or with the help of toothpicks - in this case, the straw should be wrapped around the rod. Using wire, attach the resulting arms to the doll. This will be the final touch - the toy is ready!

DIY straw houses

Miniature houses made of straw look interesting and fabulous. And, most importantly, it is quite simple to carry out such a fake. To make it you will need thick paper (or cardboard), glue, scissors, pencils, beads or ribbons for decoration and straws. First you need to make the “frame” of the house, its walls. To do this, you need to take sheets of cardboard or thick paper and draw them out so that when glued together they form a box.

Mark the door and windows of your house, then carefully cut them out. We glue the resulting walls into a rectangular box. Then you can proceed to the next part of the work - pasting the house with straw. To do this, measure the length of its walls so that the straws do not turn out longer or shorter. After you have covered the walls of the house, you need to make a roof according to the same principle as a box - you should make a triangle from thick paper or cardboard. Next, we cover the roof with tufts of straw. We connect the roof with the walls - we get a house. In order to make it more beautiful, you can use paints and brushes, additional decorations in the form of feathers that could “peek out” from under the roof straws. Door and window openings can be decorated with fabric or thin wooden plates.

DIY straw crafts: photo gallery

Low cost (straw is waste from grain processing, so it has a low price);

Naturalness (this material is natural);

Strength (despite the fact that the elements are considered fragile and break quickly, when wet they acquire elasticity and are difficult to tear);

Beautiful appearance (products made from this material have a very attractive shade, in addition, they can have a complex shape, that is, you can decorate any interior);

Combination with any style solution;

Scissors or short knife;

PVA glue;

Good luck!

Making products from straw is one of the oldest areas of folk art. They made dolls from straw, decorated icon frames, and made straw appliqués on interior items and kitchen utensils.

Even now, paintings made of straw are not uncommon. This exquisite decor can be used to decorate a box, an album with photographs, or an elite greeting card.

For crafts, you can use straw of wheat, rye, oats, barley, millet or rice.

Straw harvesting

The raw materials for crafts made from straw are straight sections of the middle part of the stems. The knees are removed, and the leaves can be useful for creating a background. Straw ribbons are formed from the stems, from which appliques are made. Straw can be dyed any color using aniline fabric dyes. Noble natural shades can be given to straw ribbons using proven folk remedies. Using a hot iron - brown, using immersion in hydrogen peroxide - silvery-white, using boiling a solution of baking soda - yellow-golden, using boiling in potassium permanganate - pinkish.

Methods for making straw ribbons

Cold way

You need to cut the stems lengthwise and smooth them firmly with the rings of scissors. With this method, the strips remain elastic and shiny.

Hot way

The second method of preparing straw ribbons for crafts or applications involves preliminary steaming of the stems at a temperature of 70-80 degrees, followed by cutting lengthwise and ironing with a hot iron. The ribbons are wide, shiny and pliable to work with.

Tools and materials

In addition to the raw materials, to make paintings from straw, you will need:

  • PVA glue;
  • a brush and a thin knitting needle for applying glue;
  • tweezers;
  • straight and manicure scissors;
  • tracing paper for making composition fragments from straw ribbons;
  • two rags: dry and wet;
  • a board or thick cardboard for the background.

Plots for beginners

If you're on the verge of creating your first straw applique, the easiest way to get inspiration is from children's coloring books. Simple pictures in a stylish straw design look elegant and sophisticated. The same ingenious simplicity should be followed when creating your own sketches.

It is convenient to arrange the finished ribbons by shade, and then select the ones you need from the resulting palette.

The required fragment is cut out of tracing paper, then sealed with straw ribbons so that they extend beyond the contours of the fragment. The workpiece must be dried under pressure. After drying, excess straw is trimmed along the contour.

It is important to position the direction of the straw correctly. For example, it is better to divide the leaves in half along the longitudinal vein and strictly observe the angle at which the strips of straw that make up the craft are located.

To make it easier to reproduce the intended composition, the drawing is made in two copies. One of them is cut into component fragments, which are subsequently pasted over with straw, and the other serves as a diagram according to which the entire composition will be assembled.

When all the component fragments are ready, that is, dried and trimmed along the edges, we lay out the entire picture on the background. If you are satisfied with the fitting, you should coat the back of the fragments with glue and dry them under a stack of the complete works of one of the classics.

It happens that some small details lack convincingness; this annoying defect can be easily corrected with a burner or soldering iron. Created with such love and labor, I want to preserve the straw miracle for posterity and protect it from the inevitable vandalism of dust and time. The best way to do this is to place the creation under glass.

In the kindergarten, children are taught to be creative. This helps them develop perseverance and develops fine motor skills. The most accessible material for children's creativity is straw. Many crafts are made from this raw material. Their variety can be found in photographs on websites where straw crafts are presented.

There are also various clubs where they conduct master classes on straw crafts for beginners. Such crafts can be attributed to the long tradition of our culture. Straw material has all the necessary properties for use in the manufacture of various crafts.

Wherever cereal plants are grown, you can find crafts made from straw. Forage remains after grain harvesting and is the cheapest raw material for creativity. It was used to make straw paintings, animal figurines and structures.

Such works can be voluminous or flat, large or small in size. Working with such raw materials is suitable for children of any age. It’s so interesting to watch how unusual heroes are made from dried stems, and even with the help of their skillful hands. And although progress today does not stand still, children are still fascinated by creativity made from straw.

Irina Kovylina

In our kindergarten there was an autumn crafts competition - "Tales of Autumn". And since my daughter and I recently went to visit my grandmother, and she was very interested in the bag with straw, then we decided to make a craft from straw - straw bull. But during the work we got so carried away that it turned out, according to the child - straw donkey. That's why master class about straw donkey.

For donkey we needed the following materials:

straw;

thick cardboard (for us it was a cookie box);

threads (to match the color straw) ;

scissors, tape and felt-tip pen.

I drew the templates and my child traced them onto a cardboard box and cut them out.

From the obtained parts we constructed a three-dimensional figure donkey. In order for it to hold its shape better, we secured the parts with tape.

Wrap donkey with straw we started from the feet, for this purpose we chose the longest and smoothest straw. Fold it in half and wrap it with thread. It's better to do this with an assistant, otherwise the straw is crumbling. Having finished with the legs, let's move on to the body.

Applying straw they wrapped it with threads to form the torso donkey.

In our kindergarten we took 2nd place in the “Tales of Autumn” competition in the “Ingenuity and Creative Approach” category. I will be glad if our master- the class will be useful to someone.
