Kusudama for beginners is an activity for creative people. The art of origami and kusudama came to us from Japan, where children are taught from childhood to make paper birds, animals, boats, lanterns, and so on. As it turns out, a lot of things can be created from such an accessible and inexpensive material as paper. Japanese adults also willingly engage in the art of origami and kusudama. Remember your childhood - you also folded origami out of paper: boats, airplanes. And now you have a good opportunity to use origami and kusudama to decorate your home, make an interesting craft with your own hands, and come up with and put together an original gift for your loved ones.

The art with which you can create interesting and original things from paper with your own hands is called origami and kusudama. Kusudama is a type of origami, a paper ball figurine made from sewn or glued modules (usually flowers from a square sheet of paper).

Kusudama and origami are a great opportunity to decorate your home, give someone a gift, and finally please yourself. These activities will help you take your mind off your worries, calm your nerves, and tune in to the good and positive.

Kusudama and origami develop logic; mathematicians are very fond of it. Creating flowers and paper balls does not require any special material costs and is accessible to both adults and children. Anyone can do this hobby, regardless of profession and age. Here are the basic designations for folding kusudama and origami:

It has long been confirmed in Japan and Europe that origami, kirigami (origami using scissors) and kusudama help improve memory, attention, and have a good effect on the well-being of adults and children. Kosudama is usually made in the form of a ball. Our master class is about just such a lily ball.

Kusudama should not be too complicated to assemble, so we will learn using the step-by-step Kusudama Lily tutorial. Our master class includes 36 flowers - lilies, which are sewn into a ball using threads. Lilies can be made of one color, but a ball made of paper of three colors looks more interesting. You can make a “tail” for the ball from any thread.

To work you will need:

  1. Thick paper (sets of colored paper are sold at any office supply store).
  2. Threads, needle.
  3. Ribbon, beads (optional).

First we will make the main element - the lily. To do this, take a square sheet of 9/9 cm. Bend the sheet lengthwise. Ironed it with your hands.

Press the middle of the sheet and fold the paper so that you get a “double square”.

This is how the “double square” turned out.

We must straighten and iron each side of the square, as in the photo, and so on 4 times (4 corners).

We ended up with this figure:

We bend the corners to the center of our figure.

We straighten the “pocket” by bending the lower part of the “pocket” upward. And so 4 times.

We bend the “tail” of the unfolded figure upwards.

Turn the workpiece over so that it has a flat side. We bend the corners of the figure towards the center.

We straighten the petals, bend each petal down.

We straighten and curl the petals with scissors. Lily is ready.

If something is not clear to you, watch a short video in which the technique of assembling a lily is shown in more detail and clearly:

Next, we continue the kosudama lily master class. We need to make 36 of these lilies. Take a thread and a needle and sew 3 lilies together, then the next 3 flowers, and so on. Leave a long thread, it will be needed at the end of the work. In conclusion, we tie all 12 groups of lilies together. You can sew a ribbon or ribbon with a tassel to the “center” of the kusudama.

The video shows the process of assembling the kusudama ball:

Kusudama for beginners is a reason to give such an interesting gift to friends. What is a gift without packaging? We make a box for beautiful decoration. The box master class will be in origami style. Master class and diagram of folding the box:

The box can be made from any thick paper.

We bend our square sheet diagonally and vertically.

Fold the glued edge toward the center, making a fold of the paper.

Kusudama is the Japanese art of making paper jewelry. This creative activity is available to people of all generations and statuses. All you need is to show your imagination and make a beautiful decorative element. If you are a creative person and are not afraid to learn something new, then you can try making a small craft, for example, a kusudama ball out of paper. A magic ball, the diagrams of which can be easily found on the Internet, is very simple and quick to make.

General information

The art of making paper decorative elements came to us from Japan. In this country, children from a very early age are taught to make paper animals, birds, lanterns and other figures. This not only develops their creative abilities, but also teaches them to be careful and prudent. Adults are also not against such entertainment. They happily take a piece of paper and begin to come up with various figures.

This art form has become very popular due to its accessibility. The work uses a minimum of materials and tools that can be easily found in your apartment or purchased inexpensively. Ready-made crafts can not only decorate the interior in an original way, but also become a good gift for a loved one.

The art of kusudama itself is a type of well-known origami. It involves making a ball figurine from modules glued together (in most cases they are flowers made from a square piece of paper).

If you have at least an hour, you can occupy it with the art of paper origami. Kusudama balls can not only decorate your living space, but also calm your nerves and lift your spirits. Researchers in Japan and various European countries have proven that kusudama and other types of origami have a beneficial effect on human attention and memory. Passion for this art improves the well-being of people of all ages.

Before you make a magic kusudama ball, you need to correctly select all the necessary materials and choose one of the varieties of this art. Kusudama is not limited to strict boundaries and can be made using various figures, shapes and shades of color. The modules that make up the finished figurine can be made in different styles and assembled into all sorts of colors. The attractiveness of the finished origami paper ball depends on these parameters. Schemes and varieties can be as follows:

The most commonly used is the classic kusudama. Its basis is the triangles from which the module is created. With their help, an original and very beautiful ball is formed. At first glance, it may seem that making such a craft takes a lot of time and effort, but this is not so. The classic ball is made quite simply and quickly. Anyone who takes their first steps in origami is advised to begin their acquaintance with the art with them.

In addition to simple patterns that are accessible to everyone, there are also more complex ones, for example, kusudama flower. This craft takes much more time and is done after gaining certain skills in making simpler figures.

There are many ways to make an origami paper ball. They are all simple, but require patience and accuracy. If you do everything correctly, the finished product will turn out original and incredibly beautiful.

One of the most unusual is the openwork kusudama ball. This paper craft will be a wonderful decoration for your apartment or office. Such a ball can be hung in any corner of the room or decorated with a New Year tree. Attention, TODAY only!

Many original artistic and applied techniques have come into our everyday life from the cultures of Eastern countries. They have a special charm and are designed to bring harmony to your home decor or your wardrobe. For example, things made using the kusudama technique are still considered healthy in Japan today. If you believe the opinions of the Japanese themselves, these composite balls can concentrate positive energy and drive away negative energy.

Making a simple element

Kusudama is a composite art. Crafts are assembled from individual elements. The most commonly used element is the one below.

You will need medium weight cardboard or thick paper. Choose interesting solutions in this regard: glossy or matte surfaces, multi-colored colors, you can even take paper with a design, pattern, streaks, and so on. Next: quick fix glue, stapler and sharp scissors.

Make a lot of square blanks.

Place the workpiece with the back side facing up. Fold it diagonally to make a triangle. In origami, such a fold is called a scarf.

Next, fold the left and right corners to the middle to make a square. Don't forget to make clear folds. To do this, you can leave the workpieces under the weight of, say, books, for a couple of minutes.

After this, fold the left and right corners down so that the edges of the cardboard meet and bring the “flaps” together.

In origami, this technique is called "squash".

Now bend both corners.

Carefully open both folds and fold them inwards.

Now wrap the sides.

Connect the sides. You can use glue or a stapler.

Using the same technique, make the remaining five petals for a complete simple kusudama. Then you can combine them into a flower.

And from ready-made flowers you can assemble a larger craft.

The cores of the flowers can be decorated with beads or buttons, placing them on glue.

New Year's ball

To create a New Year's electra ball you will need:

  • colored or plain office paper;
  • scissors;
  • PVA glue;
  • thread.

The process of creating a New Year's ball:

Preparing modules. For the module you need to take a square of paper. In this example, the size of the square is 14.5 centimeters. We mark the lines of all possible diagonals of the square, as shown in the picture, and fold a “double square” along them.

On both sides of the module you need to bend the corners so that they become obtuse.

The result is a module with two acute and two obtuse angles lying parallel to each other.

Assembly of modules. We coat the sharp corners of one module with glue and insert them into the obtuse corner of the second module.

We connect the modules together until the glued figure takes the shape of a ball.

You can add colored segments to the finished ball. You need to glue 5 modules of an additional color and glue them into a ball.

The ball can be hung on a thread and used as a decorative element or Christmas tree decoration.

Ball kusudama lily

To create a ball with kusuda lily you will need:

  • colored or plain thick paper or thin cardboard;
  • scissors;
  • PVA glue;
  • thread.

The process of creating a ball with kusuda lily:

First prepare the “electra” ball, the description of which is provided above.

We make flowers. To assemble one flower, you will need 4 rectangles of green paper and 8 rectangles of the main color of the future lily. You can choose the size of the rectangles yourself.

Each rectangle needs to be folded in half lengthwise and the corners bent on both sides, as shown in the photo.

We connect the pink green blanks. We put them one on top without glue.

We tie the folded modules in the middle with thread. It will look like a bow. Straighten the edges (future petals).

All petals must be carefully turned out. Direct the upper ones upward, forming a lily cup.

There is no need to bend the green leaves up.

Glue the finished lily flowers onto the electra ball.

One of the components of the popular art of origami today is the classic kusudama, we will describe in detail how to make it with your own hands. Initially, these balls of paper elements folded in a certain way were used for medicinal purposes. Crushed medicinal plants were poured into the ball and then tied up in the house. Today, the classic kusudama pattern is used to make various crafts that serve as decorations and decorative components for gift wrapping.

We offer you a kusudama master class for beginners, thanks to which you will learn how to make the main element of the craft. By making several of these paper elements, you can create balls and entire compositions using the kusudama technique.

We will need:

  • paper;
  • glue;
  • scissors.
  1. Fold a square piece of paper (you can use sheets for notes) in half diagonally. We should end up with a triangular shaped element. Then bend its two lower corners towards the top. Now the part has turned into a square.
  2. The sides that we folded towards the top in the previous step should now be folded in half again. As it shown on the picture. In this case, the lower part of the part is still a square.
  3. We straighten the resulting triangles on the sides so that a finger can fit into them. Opened folds in the form of pockets will give the part a look reminiscent of the facets of a diamond.
  4. Turn the part back to face you. Turn both side triangles outward.
  5. Apply glue to the front side of one of the flaps. Connect the left and right flaps to form a cone. Since the glue needs time to dry, secure the cone with a paper clip.
  6. We will need at least four such parts. The more you make, the larger the craft will be.
  7. Next, apply glue to the seam of each part and connect them one by one in the shape of a flower.
  8. Once you are sure the glue is completely dry, remove the staples. The kusudama flower is ready!

If you make 12 of these flowers according to the instructions in this master class on origami techniques, then by gluing them together you will get a kusudama ball, which will be an excellent decoration for your home. You don't have to use plain paper at all. A ball made of colorful parts will look more fun.

Useful tips
  1. The kusudama ball can be used for more than just hanging. If you attach it to a stem (wooden or plastic rod), you will get an impromptu bouquet that will delight the eye for a long time.
  2. It is not recommended to use rubber or super glue to make kusudama. Despite the fact that they dry faster than PVA or stationery, the craft may have a sloppy appearance.
  3. Try to make the folds on the paper clearer and sharper so that the kusudama looks neater.
  4. A craft made from thin paper will look more elegant. It is easier to work with because the glue dries faster. In addition, thin paper will make the ball more curvy, since more parts will be needed.
  5. Cover the work surface that you will use when creating crafts with paper or a tablecloth so as not to stain it with glue.

Having mastered the classic kusudama, you can begin to make more complex versions: electra kusudama.
