Russian fashion designer Yulia Dalakyan | Julia Dalakian

Yulia Dalakyan decided from early childhood that fashion design was her calling. The future fashion designer received her education at the Textile Institute. This was followed by collaboration with couturier Vyacheslav Zaitsev. The designer took part in international fashion shows in Milan, Berlin, and Brussels, and interned at Cavalli for a long time. 1989 becomes a landmark year in Dalakyan’s career; it was then that she founded her own atelier “Julia” and completed her debut collection in Milan. Julia's name has been heard in the fashion industry for almost 30 years! The designer has come a long and productive way, turning a small atelier into a successful Fashion House.

Yulia Dalakyan's first concept store opened its doors in October 2005 on Lavrushinsky Lane. The designer gained popularity among representatives of show business, TV presenters, and models. Stars of the capital's party scene and actresses regularly demonstrate images of the Julia Dalakyan brand. The collections are based on basic items that allow you to create an individual wardrobe for each client. When creating clothes, Julia is inspired by the image of a modern woman, independent and active. The fashion designer is not afraid of high demands; she is ready to satisfy the preferences of even the most capricious client. Non-standard texture and original color solutions can be called symbols of the brand. Yulia believes that it is not enough to sew clothes perfectly; they need to be created following certain rules. No extraordinariness or burlesque, no clichés - everything should be in moderation and individual.

Since 1989, the Julia Dalakian brand has been in demand among Russian and Western clients. An interesting point: in the first years, the designer focused on the European and American markets, demonstrating her collections at fashion weeks from New York to Milan. The brand also produced premium clothing for wealthy clients. Only in the mid-90s, when the popularity of domestic designers began to grow in Russia, Yulia decided to conquer the Russian market.

Yulia Dalakyan works according to the standard and releases two collections a year: spring-summer and autumn-winter. The designer demonstrates new products at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week as part of Russian Fashion Week. Working in your own Fashion House and showroom takes up most of the designer’s time. FASHION HOUSE

Moscow, Yauzskaya street 1/15 building 3

Yulia Dalakyan creates stylish clothes for business people and stage costumes for show business stars. After working for some time with the Roberto Cavalli Fashion House, she returned to Moscow and created her own Fashion House.

– Julia, your Fashion House has existed for 20 years, and the show of the anniversary collection “SUNNY RAIN” was confirmation of this. Tell us how you managed to become one of the famous designers in Russia?

– In 1997, I showed my new collection in Moscow, as soon as the first Fashion Week took place, and after some time, every six months I had premiere seasonal shows. I tried not to leave this rhythm. Fashion is a cosmopolitan phenomenon; you need to adhere to the rules that the entire fashion industry of the world follows. Of course, we are far from being at the stage of brand development that could have been in 20 years in any other country, but we have certain specifics, we have our own Fashion House, which dresses not only regular customers. We also sell clothes through online stores, and we have a boutique where you can buy ready-made clothes, and we are constantly updating and expanding our collections.

– Has the crisis affected the work of your Fashion House?

– Of course, it influenced us in some way, but it affected our clients to a greater extent than it did on us specifically. Although, to hide it, this situation also affected us, because our Fashion House has no sponsors, that is, we work for ourselves.

– By what standards, in your opinion, is the fashion industry developing in Russia? Does Russian fashion have its own identity?

– Standards are seasonal shows, at least 40 models on the catwalk. Also accessories, a series of shoes that are released every six months, that is, those international standards with which we try to keep up and respond more quickly to seasonal changes, adhering to fashion trends. As for national motifs in fashion, I have never adhered to them, although commercially it justifies itself. I believe that if there are some intellectual discoveries in a constructive style, then this is much more important for fashion, both national and world, than making some kind of fakes on the topic of national history. Now Russian fashion has no face, because there is no industry, there are certain brands that, in difficult conditions, grow themselves or with the help of investors.

But these brands will sooner or later be the face of the country, because this is how fashion has developed all over the world, starting with Dior, Pierre Cardin, etc.

– Which fashion designers influenced your collections and approach to work? What type of people are you creating a collection for?

– Well, naturally, everyone had an influence at the educational level. During my student years, it was an intellectual explosion that came from Jean-Paul Gaultier, Armani's cultural, very tactful approach to fashion, and Valentino's stunning evening wear. The influence is that you see discoveries, and it is impossible not to react to them, and at different moments this leaves its mark. I have such a contingent that I most often work with very beautiful clients, and their age is not important to me, in any case, my clothes are designed not only for show business, but for people who know how to approach life in a more sophisticated way than simple common man.

– Tell us about yourself, your family...

– I was born in Baku, my mother is Russian, my father is Armenian, so the specifics of a more mixed family than just an Armenian one. Even now I was in Yerevan for the first time, I finally managed to see the city, because as a child I went to Armenia with my sisters for the summer holidays, but it was in fits and starts and more of a vacation than an educational story.

– What do you value in people? What is the ideal man in your understanding?

– In people, first of all, I value decency, that’s why I try to live by this principle myself. I also appreciate honesty and the ability to make small compromises, when your principles are not violated and at the same time you help another person live.

As for men, of course, this must be a strong person who knows how to react to the difficulties of life only as another incentive to achieve something.

– How do you feel about modern Moscow life? What did this city give you?

– This city is my favorite, due to the nature of my work I lived a lot in Milan, Florence, and traveled around the world a lot. I had a choice - to stay in New York, to work in London, but it is impossible to compare Moscow with anything, because there is no such dynamics, such endless life anywhere. I love Moscow for its dynamic lifestyle, and it taught me to move to the beat, reacting to all changes in life.

– What advice do you have for the younger generation of designers? How to achieve success?

– I think that you need to decide very precisely for yourself: to be a designer or not? I don't know any other job as difficult as this. I don’t recommend starting with the production of your own collection, even if you have graduated from college. You need to get hired to understand the process from the inside. If I had not worked for Zaitsev, I probably would not have understood what I would do. No institute will ever teach you how to become a designer, it must be within you.

Biography

Julia started drawing at the age of four. Even then, she had formed a completely clear approach to fashion; she made albums with different themes: one with evening dresses, the other with skirts and blouses.

Julia about herself

“I must say that as a child I was a fairly complete person and knew that I would become a fashion designer. But I also had a hobby - I wrote fairy tales. At first she wrote them down in block letters and drew illustrations for them, and later took part in school competitions in literature. My writings were published in newspapers, and my grandmother kept it all.

It was difficult for me to decide: to become a fashion designer or continue to write. In addition, I graduated from a music school with a degree in piano and even entered the Gnessin School. I was an average player and had absolutely nothing to do there. I understood this and left after the first exam.

Before the institute (now the Textile Academy) I worked for Zaitsev. This is an amazing person who works according to the Western model, has his own fashion house with absolute pressure on his name, pressure on everything: from the design bureau to customer service. This is a normal Western system, when the individual decides everything 100%. This is how style is born. I got into this system at the age of 16, right after school. I worked with Zaitsev for a year with pleasure, and what I received there, I did not receive at the institute: firstly, the personality, and secondly, how this personality works. He is an excellent artist and graphic artist, with a great feel for fabric. I realized that a fashion designer is not a person who just draws, he must be a designer-stylist, that is, the vision of an absolutely whole image is the main thing, and the rest will come with experience.”

The year 2000 became a turning point in the fate of the designer.

In Milan, Julia met Roberto Cavalli and received an invitation to become one of the employees of the brand’s design bureau: Cavalli liked her ideas for designing clothes. At Roberto Cavalli, Julia was asked to work on the men's line, or rather, to work on the creation of a new collection of men's shirts. It was with her help that the famous collection of “crumpled” shirts with ruffles was created, which are still popular among the brand’s customers.
